Our Graveyard

“Welcome to the monumental inscriptions from the church of St John the Evangelist, Liverpool.    The church is situated in the Knotty Ash district at the junctions of Thomas Lane and Brookside Avenue.   The foundations for the church were laid in 1834 and it was consecrated on the 18th February 1836.     This volume contains the head-stone inscriptions from the grave-yard and the inscriptions from plaques inside the church and on the stained glass windows.

The original grave-yard was the area immediately around the church.    One part of this was set aside for single interments.   This was completely filled by 1885.   You will not find any head-stones there as the rules for that portion did not allow for them.   A memorial cross does commemorate those laid to rest there between 1836 and 1890.     In the other part of the original grave-yard you will find some head-stones that pre-date the church.   They were moved here from the church of St Nicholas at the Pier Head when the road there was widened.   In 1895 a piece of land was presented to the church as an extension to the grave-yard.   In this volume I have referred to this piece of land as the ‘new’ burial ground, and the area around the church as the ‘old’ burial ground.   A wall does divide them and it is obvious as to which is which.

The original Burial Registers have been transcribed and the typed transcripts, if you wish to inspect them, are available at the Liverpool Reference Library.

Just a word of thanks to Greg Clarkson for his help and to my wife Rosemary, who has done most of the clerical work.   I must also thank the Rev. Roy Doran for his permission and assistance in preparing this volume which we hope will be of some interest and help to you.”
